For maths to stick, pupils need to be engaged in making connections, creating conjectures and spotting patterns.

We need to provide pupils with an understanding of how and why, before any rules are devised, since this conceptual understanding is more likely to remain with the pupil.

Rules need to be applied with caution: for example, a rule that is often taught to young children is always to subtract the smaller number from the larger number.

This can result in difficulties later when negative numbers are introduced and even when carrying out column subtraction because this rule has become entrenched so to work out 24 - 16, they quite reasonably decide to take 4 from 6...
